A Ghost's Story by wneleh (Riley/ Young)

Title: A Ghost's Story
Author: wneleh
Characters/Pairings: Hunter Riley/ Everett Young
Rating: R
Warnings: Sexual content (not very explicit), canonical character death
Summary: Airman Hunter Riley's ghost first appeared to Col. Everett Young the night Everett killed him

Review: This is one of those pairings that you wouldn't immediately think of, but once you ponder it for a while it makes perfect sense. The author has a knack for getting Riley's "voice" just right - his dry humor and sweet personality. His back story with Young is explored in detail and makes you want to watch "Water" again, just for that scene. It's also an empathetic look at Young's downward spiral during early Season 2.

The Other Side of This by Anr (TJ/Young)

Title: The Other Side Of This
Author: anr
Characters/Pairings: TJ/Young
Rating: PG
Warnings: None. Spoilers for 'Intervention'.
Summary: Last time, she remembers.

Review: Okay, I'll admit that I was more than a bit excited to find that Anr had written SGU fic. Ness has been writing gut-wrenching agnst - you know, the kind of fic that leaves you feeling like you've just taken a boot to the midsection - since pretty much the dawn of Stargate fandom. If there's anyone who can convey the rawness of the whole TJ/Young situation immediately post-Intervention, it's her. This short piece follows TJ in her grief as she tries to re-adjust to her new 'normal' after losing the baby. Powerful in it's sparse prose, this is some of Ness' finest work.

The Moon as Seen from Venus by Orokiah (Camille/Sharon)

Title: The Moon as Seen from Venus
Author: Orokiah
Characters/Pairings: Camille/Sharon
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Sharon and Camile, across the great divide.

Review: One of the things I love about this show is that even the minor characters have stories of their own. Characters like Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Armstrong, Emily, Matt Jr., Sharon... they all matter to the people on Destiny, and so, from a story point-of-view, they all matter. Through the course of the series we see Camille really grow as a person and find her purpose amongst the crew. This story is from Sharon's perspective and is about being the one waiting at home, watching as the person you love slowly changes and begins slipping away. It's about what it takes, what you have to accept, to keep that from happening.

Three Ghosts by troyswann (salieri) (Eli, Mrs. Wallace, Gloria, Rush, Telford)

Title: Three Ghosts
Author: troyswann (Salieri)
Characters/Pairings: Eli and Mrs. Wallace, Gloria and Rush, Telford and friend
Rating: G
Warnings: No warnings. Spoilers for 'Pathogen' and 'Awakening'
Summary: Three snippets, three different ghosts

Review: Salieri gives us a trio of wonderfully textured ficlets about three haunted characters - Mrs. Wallace sees hints of the host each time Eli comes to visit, and wonders where the young soldiers end and where her son begins. Rush contemplates why, of all the people that Destiny could manifest, does the ship choose the one that forces him to question himself. And my favorite, in a clever nod to Barry B. Longyear's novella Enemy Mine, Telford gets to know his alien companions. All three stories have a certain poignancy about them, and leave the reader feeling just a little unsettled, as if they've just had their own brush with the ethereal.

When the Smoke Clears by annerb (Ginn)

Title: When the Smoke Clears
Author: annerbhp
Characters/Pairings: Ginn
Rating: G
Warnings: None. Spoilers for E2x01-Intervention
Summary: There are paths before her, variables changing moment by moment, but not dead is the only way she can ever make them mean anything.

Review: This ficlet is a short but very gritty look at the inner workings of the Lucian Alliance power struggle. Ginn steps up, not because she wants to, but because it's the only thing she can do.

Snippet: I'd like to show you a snippet, but this piece is quite short. Go read. Enjoy. Feedback.

A Certain Romance by cold_queen_5 (TJ/Rush)

Title: A Certain Romance
Author: cold_queen_5 at cold_fiction
Characters/Pairings: TJ/Rush
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: She can appreciate the absence of emotion he provides, but even silence isn't nothing.

Review: This is not a pairing that immediately comes to my mind when I watch the show, but cold_queen_5 sells it like a new truck at a hail sale - both Rush and TJ are spot on, but their flaws are clearly on display. While I enjoyed this TJ, it's Rush who really catches my attention here with his understated efforts to get TJ to take better care of herself, showing he really does care about the people around him. This Nicholas is very much the man he was in 'Human', a man who has been a husband, a caretaker to an independent wife, and somebody who knows that romance is not all about flowery words and grandiose gestures, but subtle actions and quiet support. And all beautifully in character.

Something Holy, Something More by ziparumpazoo (Emily/ Young)

Title: Something Holy, Something More
Author: ziparumpazoo
Characters/Pairings: Emily Young/ Everett Young
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Implied dubious-consent and body swapping
Summary: A marriage does not fail overnight; it takes years for the cogs to wear down enough to start slipping, but even then, the wheels continue to turn.

Review: This is probably the definitive Emily/ Everett pre-series story out there to date. It takes an unapologetic look at their relationship where nobody is the villain but both end up losing. Understandable in its glide down the slippery slope one cannot help but wonder how many other relationships the Stargate Program has caused to collapse. The author takes us on a detailed rollercoaster ride of a thousand papercuts leading to the final bleed-out. Written with astute observation this story will haunt you with its sympathetic look at two lives drifting apart.

Frayed at the Edges by nemo_r (Ensemble)

Title: Frayed at the Edges
Author: nemo_r
Characters/Pairings: Ensemble
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Dealing with the aftermath of Divided. Multiple POVs.

Review: It was pointed out to me that Divided is a lot like a training exercise, a precursor to the events of Incursion. The crew of Destiny gets a chance to figure out strategy and pick apart her defenses, and in this episode tag, they also get to deal with the fallout of the failed coup, and of having to choose sides. This is a nice collection of scenes dealing with the player's feelings, running the gamut from fear, anger, disappointment, and self-doubt. Civilians realizing where loyalties really lie, and soldiers fighting a war under their own roof, nemo_r tells a story where there really are no winners.
